Prelude No.1 — Carolina Maugeri
Agitato C-Dur
Kinderscenen, in a paper boat
navigating the flood waters, muddy
from a boy’s imitations toward musical
actions. He sleeps at the piano
his fingers curled around the keys
& tired, yellow from rubbing
rue. He would warm his mother
who quietly declined: she wasn’t
in the mood for medicine.
The boy dreams he hangs
from a tree branch & relieves
himself into the flood.
Wetness drops from his lips
to the pressed keys. It’s
his genius disguised as melancholy.
